The 18 questions buyers actually ask before booking an ADAS calibration.
Cost, insurance, dealer vs. independent, lift kits, OEM glass, why calibrations fail. We answer them the way we’d answer them on the phone — direct, no fluff.
The basics
1. Do I really need ADAS calibration after a windshield replacement?
Yes — for almost every vehicle made in the last 8 years. If your windshield has any kind of camera bracket behind the rear-view mirror, that camera runs lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, or all three. Every major automaker’s service manual says: replace the windshield, recalibrate the camera. Not optional.
The car may seem to drive normally. The features may seem to still work. That’s the problem — most ADAS systems will fail quietly. Lane-keep will think the lane is six inches to the left of where it actually is. Auto-emergency braking won’t trigger when it should, or will trigger when it shouldn’t. You won’t notice until the day you need it.
If a glass shop tells you “calibration’s not required on yours,” ask them to put it in writing and cite the OEM service manual. They won’t. Call us at 208-644-8844 with your year/make/model and we’ll tell you in 30 seconds whether you need it.
2. How much does ADAS calibration cost?
In Eastern Idaho, plan on a range:
- Single-camera static calibration (most Subaru, Honda, Toyota): roughly $250–$400
- Multi-system or dual static + dynamic (Subaru EyeSight, some Ford/RAM trucks, anything with forward camera and radar): $400–$700
- Post-collision multi-sensor work: can go higher
The dealer will usually quote $600–$1,000+ for the same work because their labor rate is higher and they’re not specialists. We’re specialists, our overhead is lower, and we publish a real number before any work starts.
The honest variable: every manufacturer’s procedure is different. A 2026 Subaru Outback takes a different setup than a 2018 Honda Pilot. Call 208-644-8844 with year, make, model, and what got worked on — we’ll give you a real quote.
3. Does insurance cover ADAS calibration?
Usually, yes — but it’s almost always a separate line item that needs to be specifically called out.
If your windshield is being replaced under a comprehensive glass claim, calibration is typically covered as a related expense. Same for collision claims. The catch: some adjusters won’t volunteer that they cover it. They’ll pay the glass shop, the glass shop won’t have calibration in-house, and you’ll get a phone call asking you to come in for “the second half” of the job. Then everyone argues about who’s paying.
What we do: write up the calibration with a clear invoice that references the OEM-required procedure, your VIN, and the documented pre-scan and post-scan. That paperwork is what insurance needs to approve the reimbursement.

4. How long does ADAS calibration take?
Plan on 1 to 3 hours in the shop for most jobs:
- Single-camera static (typical Honda Sensing, Toyota Safety Sense, basic Subaru): about 1 to 1.5 hours
- Dynamic-only (some Fords, GM): prep is fast, the drive cycle takes 30 to 60 minutes
- Dual static + dynamic (Subaru EyeSight, some RAM, some Ford CoPilot360): 2 to 3 hours
- Post-collision multi-system: allow up to a half-day
We don’t tie up your bay if it’s a quick one. We don’t oversell time we don’t need. Most people drop the vehicle off in the morning and pick it up the same afternoon.
5. What’s the difference between static and dynamic ADAS calibration?
Static calibration is done in the shop with the vehicle stationary. We set up OEM-specified targets at exact distances, on a level floor, under controlled lighting, and the vehicle’s camera or radar gets aimed at those targets. It’s a precise, repeatable procedure — and it requires a shop set up to do it properly.
Dynamic calibration is done on the road. After some initial setup, we take the vehicle on a controlled drive — typically a flat highway stretch with clean lane markings — and the vehicle’s computer learns where the lanes are, where other vehicles are, and where it’s pointed.
Many vehicles require both, in the manufacturer’s exact sequence. A Subaru Outback with EyeSight will fail if you do them in the wrong order. We perform both procedures — and we’re the only shop in Eastern Idaho explicitly set up to do both. Glass shops that say “we do ADAS calibration” usually mean they do the dynamic drive only, because static requires the targets and the controlled space.
6. Does it matter if my windshield is OEM or aftermarket?
It matters more than most people realize. The camera behind your windshield looks through an optical window — a specific area of the glass with controlled thickness, tint, and clarity. OEM glass has that optical window manufactured to the carmaker’s exact spec. Some aftermarket glass doesn’t, or the optical zone is slightly off.
What that means in practice: we see vehicles every month — especially Honda, Acura, and certain Subarus — where the calibration won’t complete because the aftermarket glass distorts the camera’s view. The dealer charges twice trying to fix it. The customer ends up paying for the windshield twice.
Our recommendation: for Honda Sensing and Subaru EyeSight, push your insurance for OEM glass. For most Toyota Safety Sense, Ford CoPilot360, RAM, and GM systems, quality aftermarket usually works fine. If you bring us a vehicle with aftermarket glass that won’t calibrate, we’ll tell you straight up — and we won’t keep charging you for repeat attempts that aren’t going to succeed.
Money + insurance
7. Do I have to go to the dealer, or can an independent shop calibrate my ADAS?
You don’t have to go to the dealer — and most of our customers come to us specifically because the dealer quoted them double.
The dealer has one thing we don’t: brand loyalty marketing. They don’t have anything we don’t have on the technical side. We use the same OEM-licensed targets, the same scan tools, the same manufacturer procedures. The work is identical. The paperwork is identical. The pre-scan and post-scan are identical. The difference is the labor rate and the wait time.
Where the dealer is the right call: if your vehicle is under a warranty repair tied to a specific TSB, or if there’s a known OEM-only software update that requires factory tooling. We’ll tell you straight up if that’s your situation — we’d rather send you to the dealer than do work that won’t hold.
For 95% of post-windshield, post-collision, post-suspension calibrations: independent shops like ours do this work every day, faster and at a lower price, with the same OEM spec.
8. Do I need ADAS calibration after an alignment or suspension work?
Sometimes — and the answer depends on what changed:
- Routine wheel alignment where ride height didn’t change: usually no recalibration needed. The forward camera doesn’t care about toe-in adjustments.
- Suspension work that changed ride height (new struts, control arms, lowering springs, sagging springs replaced): yes, often. The camera and radar see the world at a different angle now.
- Lift kit or leveling kit: yes, almost always — see the next question.
- Heavy hauling or towing setup permanent change: yes if it changes how the vehicle sits at rest.
We don’t do wheel alignment in-house — we’ll refer you to alignment shops we trust in Idaho Falls. But after the alignment is done, bring it back to us if the work touched suspension geometry. We’ll measure ride height, compare to OEM spec, and recalibrate the ADAS only if it actually needs it. We won’t sell you a calibration you don’t need.
9. Do I need a calibration after a lift kit or leveling kit?
Almost always, yes — especially on Ford F-150, F-250, RAM 1500, Tundra, Tacoma, and Silverado/Sierra. These are the vehicles we see most in Eastern Idaho and they’re the ones where lift kits cause real ADAS problems.
Here’s what happens: you put a 2″ leveling kit on the front. The vehicle now sits two inches higher, but the forward camera is mounted to the windshield and the radar is mounted to the front bumper or grille. Both are now aimed two inches higher than the manufacturer intended. Adaptive cruise misreads distance. Lane-keep drifts. Forward-collision warning either constantly false-alarms or doesn’t trigger when it should.
For most lift kits over 1.5 inches we recommend recalibration — sometimes the camera needs an aimer adjustment, sometimes the radar bracket needs to be re-shimmed, sometimes a full static + dynamic procedure is required. Bring it in. We’ll measure the actual ride-height change at all four corners and tell you what your specific vehicle needs.
Warning lights + symptoms
10. What if my dashboard warning light won’t go away?
ADAS-related warnings — lane-keep off, adaptive cruise unavailable, forward-collision warning fault, blind-spot system fault — almost always need calibration, not a code clear.
Clearing the code makes the light go off for the next ignition cycle. Then it comes back. Sometimes it takes a week. Sometimes it takes a drive. But if the underlying sensor is out of spec, the code returns because the vehicle keeps detecting that the sensor isn’t reading correctly.
What we do: pre-scan to capture exactly which codes are set and on which modules, diagnose whether it’s a calibration issue or an actual hardware fault (broken bracket, water-damaged camera, severed wiring), then either calibrate to spec or refer you to the right repair. After the work, we post-scan and print the documentation showing the codes are properly cleared and won’t return.
Clearing the code without calibrating is the #1 reason people end up paying twice. We don’t do that.
11. What happens if I don’t calibrate my ADAS?
Three possible outcomes — and you don’t get to pick which one.
Outcome 1 (best case): The system disables itself. The vehicle senses that the calibration is out of spec and turns off lane-keep, adaptive cruise, and emergency braking. You drive a car with a permanent warning light and no driver-assist features. This is what most modern Hondas and Toyotas do.
Outcome 2 (middle case): The features stay active but do the wrong thing. Lane-keep nudges you into the wrong lane. Adaptive cruise brakes for a phantom vehicle. Forward-collision misses an actual obstacle. This is the dangerous case — the car feels normal until the moment you need the system.
Outcome 3 (worst case): In an accident, your insurance company’s adjuster pulls the vehicle’s event-data recorder and finds a documented un-calibrated ADAS system. You may have liability exposure, especially in a multi-vehicle claim. Several states are starting to look at this. Idaho isn’t there yet, but the case law is moving.
The cost of a calibration is a fraction of any of these outcomes. Just get it done.
12. My forward collision warning / lane departure / blind spot isn’t working — what do I do?
Bring it in. We’ll diagnose it.
These three systems fail for the same handful of reasons:
- Recent windshield replacement without a follow-up calibration (forward collision + lane departure)
- Body shop work that touched the bumper, fender, or mirror without a follow-up calibration (blind spot, rear cross-traffic)
- Suspension change that altered the angle the sensors look at (any forward-facing system)
- A damaged sensor or bracket that needs replacement before calibration
- A wiring or module fault that’s blocking communication entirely
Our diagnostic process is straightforward: pre-scan to see exactly what’s set, physical inspection of the sensors and brackets, then either calibration (if the sensor is healthy but out of spec) or referral for parts replacement (if hardware is bad). Most of the time, it’s a calibration. Sometimes it’s a $40 bracket. Once in a while it’s something bigger. We’ll tell you which.

13. Do I need calibration after a minor fender-bender?
If the impact was anywhere near a sensor, yes. Even if “it looks fine.”
The sensors in question: forward camera (behind the windshield), forward radar (behind the front bumper or grille), corner radars (inside the rear bumper for cross-traffic and blind spot), and any side-view camera (front fender or mirror). An impact that bent a bumper bracket by a few degrees is enough to throw the radar out of spec.
Insurance adjusters disagree about this all the time. Some will pay for the calibration as part of the claim. Others will tell you “the codes aren’t on, so it doesn’t need it.” That second answer is wrong — most ADAS systems will set a calibration-out-of-tolerance code only after you’ve driven it for a while, sometimes weeks.
Our policy: bring it in, we’ll pre-scan and physically inspect, and we’ll tell you whether the calibration actually needs to happen or whether the bumper repair didn’t disturb anything critical. The pre-scan is fast and gives you something to send to your adjuster.
How we work
14. What’s a pre-scan and post-scan, and why does it matter?
A pre-scan is a full electronic readout of every module in your vehicle, captured before any work starts. It tells us — and your body shop, and your insurance — exactly what codes and faults exist at the baseline.
A post-scan is the same readout after the work is done. It confirms the work is complete, the codes are properly cleared, and nothing new has been introduced.
Why it matters: without a pre-scan, you can’t prove that a fault existed before the body shop’s work. Without a post-scan, you can’t prove the calibration was completed correctly. Body shops and insurance companies have been fighting about this for ten years. We do both, every time, with printed documentation you can hand to either.
15. Why won’t my car finish calibrating?
When a calibration fails or hangs, it’s almost always one of four causes:
- Aftermarket glass with the wrong optical zone — common on Honda, Acura, and high-trim Subaru. The camera can’t see through the glass properly.
- A damaged or improperly seated camera bracket — the camera is reading at the wrong angle relative to the windshield mount.
- Other DTCs blocking the calibration procedure — some vehicles require all unrelated codes to be cleared before the calibration step will even attempt. Safelite’s policy of “we won’t calibrate until you clear all codes” leaves customers stuck.
- A suspension or alignment issue the vehicle is detecting and refusing to calibrate around.
We don’t give up after one attempt. We diagnose why it’s not completing — and we charge fairly. If we determine the cause is something we can’t fix (bad glass, bad bracket, bad hardware), we’ll tell you what needs to happen next and we won’t run up an open-ended bill chasing it.

16. Does AAC offer mobile ADAS calibration?
We’re a shop-based calibration specialist, and that’s a deliberate choice — not a limitation.
Mobile calibration sounds convenient, but the static portion of most modern ADAS procedures requires a level floor, controlled lighting, exact distances measured from precision targets to the vehicle, and an environment free of reflective surfaces and visual clutter. A driveway in November isn’t that environment. A parking lot at noon isn’t either.
Mobile calibration providers either skip the static procedure (and only do the dynamic drive — which leaves half the work undone on dual-calibration vehicles like Subaru EyeSight), or they bring portable setups that don’t meet OEM specs. Both produce calibrations that may pass the on-vehicle check but won’t hold under real driving conditions.

17. Does AAC service my brand?

- Tesla — most Tesla calibrations are software-driven and handled by Tesla service. We can pre/post-scan, but the actual recalibration usually goes through Tesla.
- Rivian / Lucid — call first.
- BMW / Mercedes / Audi / Porsche — luxury Euro brands require manufacturer-specific tooling. Some procedures we can do; some need to go to the dealer.

18. How is AAC different from the dealer or Safelite?
Two short answers.
Vs. the dealer: same OEM-spec targets, same scan tools, same procedures — at independent-shop pricing and without a two-week wait. The dealer is the right call for warranty repairs tied to a TSB. For everything else, we do the same work for less.
Vs. Safelite (or other glass-shop “ADAS calibration”): Safelite is a glass shop with a calibration sideline. We’re a calibration shop. They typically only do the dynamic drive portion — fine for some vehicles, half the job for others. They have a policy of refusing to calibrate if any unrelated codes are set, which leaves customers bouncing between Safelite and the dealer. They charge a flat fee that often doesn’t cover repeat attempts.
What we are: a dedicated ADAS calibration shop in Idaho Falls. Static and dynamic procedures, OEM-spec targets, full pre-scan and post-scan documentation. We don’t sell glass. We don’t sell parts. We don’t do alignment. The calibration is the whole thing — and that focus is the difference.
